Case Study - Bria Collier
One of our mentees, Ms. Bria Collier recently graduated from Fisk University with a Masters Degree in Physics.
I met Bria, a college freshman at a mentoring event I held in the basement of a church. At the time, Bria was involved in the One Summer job program.
The purpose of the event was to raise awareness about opportunities at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
All students interested in more information and possibly a campus visit were asked to meet with me afterwards.
Bria introduced herself, her academic background and interest in pursuing a degree in physics. She informed me that she had run out of money to return to school, Stetson University.
I told her to send me her transcripts.
I researched HBCUs and found UAPB was a good fit for what Bria was studying.
I called Scott Craig/UAPB recruiter who was a participant in the World of Soul College Fair HBCU Expo.
UAPB President’s scholarship to Bria.
Mother’s testimony via video. “Thank you for being a mentor to her.”
She applied herself and worked vigorously
Bria graduated with honors, became a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and accepted into the Fisk University masters to PhD Program.
Today, Bria is a working scientist at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in California.
